I remember where I was when I had my very first taste of Pizza Pilgrims, I was at a music festival and they were still serving pizzas out of their little green Piaggio Ape van. I even remember what pizza it was – my favourite – a Margherita. Simplicity at its best. Quality ingredients with a gorgeously thin and crispy crust. It was pretty epic! Since then the two brothers James and Thom, have gone on to open restaurants in Soho and Carnaby Street. So when the lovely people at Zomato invited me to attend one of their #ZomatoMeetUp’s to help choose the Pizza Pilgrims pizza of the month (to appear on their restaurant menus), it was a pretty instantaneous ‘yes please’ from me!
Arriving and seeing the familiar faces of Amy & Frankie (total gems by the way!) and drinks orders quickly taken, we got down to the serious business of being #PizzaGods for the evening. James explained that each of the chefs at their restaurants had the opportunity to create their favourite pizza – some a little more successfully than others but read on and see if you can pick the winner…
First up was The Mellow Yellow by Dario – ricotta infused with saffron, fried courgettes, provolo and Parmesan breadcrumbs. A really strong start. I enjoyed the taste of the saffron ricotta, but the courgettes were a little wet.
Next up was Zuca, I am your father by Fabio – pumpkin purée base, rosemary, provolo and pancetta. The rosemary complimented the pumpkin beautifully and the pancetta brought texture and seasoning to the pizza. Very tasty!
Sausage and Mash by Allesio was next – White pizza with Italian fennel salsiccia, onion and porcini gravy, mashed potatoes, basil and parmesan. If I was to see this pizza on a menu, I would avoid it because of the carb on carb element, but surprisingly this was mine and Frankie’s favourite pizza! The sausage was full of flavour and the mash added a lovely creaminess to the pizza. It was just pure comfort.
The Bumblebee by Giada followed – Margherita with tuna, sweet corn, black olives, sliced red onions, basil and Parmesan. We all agreed that this pizza was a bit student’ish – like when you come home at 2am, intoxicated and hungry, searching through your cupboards for something to eat. Not great, sorry Giada!
And finally it was the P.L.T by Matteo – White pizza with provolo and porchetta dressed with fresh romaine lettuce and sliced beef tomatoes. Basically a salad on top of a pizza base. This was another one we were all in agreement. A salad on top of a pizza? Nah! We felt that if you wanted a salad, you’d order one and why go to a pizza restaurant to order salad anyway?
So which one would you pick as your winner? Well I can tell you that our group chose Zuca, I am your father. The pizza will appear on the restaurant menus during October – we felt that the pumpkin would be perfect for the autumn.
