#STFFbitesize – Blacklock

Hi, my name is Sam and I am a carnivore.  I love meat, I crave meat and if it’s barbecued then even better.

Blacklock is named after the American foundry that produces the irons the restaurant uses to finish off the meat that has been started over a charcoal grill. From three Hawksmoor alumni, you just know the quality of the product is going to be excellent.  Rounding up our friends, Kellie and Tim, we set a date for our meat feast of epic proportions.

Food:  Blacklock does one thing and one thing only. Chops. You’re screwed if you’re a vegetarian! Our group decided to go for the ‘all-in’ option which includes pre-chop bites (cheese & pickle, Parma ham and egg and anchovy on oat crackers. A slightly random start but I guess they don’t want to fill you up too much for what lies ahead), chops of the day piled on top of flatbread and a side dish per person. Beef short rib, pork loin, pork belly and lamb chops were all cooked to perfection. A slight char and crispness on the outside but still retaining its juiciness and still nice and pink in the middle. We ordered two 10 hour ash roasted sweet potatoes, barbecued baby gems and charred courgettes, chicory and Stilton. All of them were excellent choices and had a lovely smokiness without being acrid.  One of the best parts of the meal though was the flat bread at the bottom of the pile of chops. Soaking up all the delicious meat juices, it’s a genius idea and one that I will be stealing for myself next time we have a barbecue at home! The cheesecake we all shared for dessert was rich and really delicious, I loved that it came in a large serving dish and the waiter dished it up for us. It really added to the charm of the restaurant for me. 

Ambiance: The restaurant doesn’t take any evening reservations and I had read that the queues can stretch out the door on Friday and Saturday nights, so we arrived early (7pm) and were seated immediately. The restaurant is lively and there’s a great buzz around of everyone having a good time. I absolutely adored the 80’s playlist and especially so when Depeche Mode came on! (My favourite band in the whole world!) 

Service: Relaxed and friendly. I was particularly impressed when a spilt drink was quickly replaced without us even having to ask. 

Price:  The ‘all-in’ offer is incredible value at £20 per person. Cocktails are also just as reasonably priced at £5.00 each.  Obviously we got a little carried away with the drinks and our total bill came to £168.75 including service. 

And finally….a meat-lovers paradise that offers an excellent quality product at a very reasonable price.  We had an extremely enjoyable evening and it was a perfect choice for our dinner. Next time you’re in Soho, I highly recommend you give Blacklock a try.

      Noooo! How disappointing! You definitely won’t have the same issues at Blacklock. You should also try a Flat Iron – steak and chips for £10! And it’s good!
